Your Guide to Writing a Great Real Estate Job Description
Home / About / Industry Insights /
When it comes to job adverts and listings, most agencies overlook the importance of the job description. It’s easy to fall into the trap of copy and paste or using an old job description to save time. The truth is, a job description is a major factor in attracting top talent for your business. It’s what applicants see first, and tells them why they should apply for you over your competitors.
So, you don’t want to use outdated information or generic descriptions that they can find at any business. In a competitive market, your job description speaks volumes. That’s why ITG has put together a guide to writing the perfect job description in the real estate industry. Let’s get started.
Be Clear Before You Write
To ensure that you’re targeting candidates who are suited to your role and company, it’s important to be clear about your requirements before writing your job description. For instance, what will the role entail (i.e is it a support role or a management role?) And, what is the culture of your company or office? It’s important to seek individuals who are a good fit for your team culture (whether that’s fast-paced, energetic, or team-focused). Ultimately, defining what you’re looking for before you get started will help to tailor your search to the appropriate audience.
The Job Description: Section by Section
A strong and attractive job description will have clear sections that target the top talent on the market. For example:
The Hook:
Applicants want to know why they should apply for the job above all else. So, this must be the opening section of your job description. For instance, don’t tell applicants that you’re a real estate business based in Sydney, but rather “Join a team that has led the Sydney real estate market for over 20 years”.
Key Responsibilities:
To separate candidates who would be a good fit from those more inexperienced, the key responsibilities section is vital. This should be ordered logically, in order of priority, and with realistic expectations for the role.
Required/Desired Qualifications:
Now, be realistic and clear on what is required (which can sometimes be state-specific), and what is desired from you as a business. This helps candidates determine if they are eligible to apply.
Benefits:
Finally, top talent candidates are likely to have packages with plenty of benefits already, and they’re looking for what’s in it for them. So, this section is where you demonstrate how your business can supplement their lifestyle and career. This includes:
- Commission Structure
- Car Allowance
- Hybrid Working Structure
- Company Events
- Career Progression
- Health Benefits
How To Separate Your Business From The Competition:
Most job descriptions will look and read the same, especially if you aren’t emphasising the difference between your business and what it’s offering applicants. So, a few things to avoid include:
- Vague Language: Language like ‘hardworking’, ‘experienced’ and ‘track record’ is vague and can apply to anyone. It doesn’t specifically explain the level of skill that you’re looking for, meaning your search is unrefined.
- Unrealistic Expectations: Many job descriptions fall into the trap of asking for 10 years of experience for a junior role. It’s important to be transparent and realistic about what you’re looking for, whilst understanding the current market.
Make It Stand Out
Instead, try to make your job description stand out on the market and amongst your competitors by using information that applicants can use to refine their searches. For example, many applicants will refine their search to a job title or location. So, be sure to include clear job titles that are focal points of your job description. For instance, include “Senior Property Manager” as the title instead of “Superstar Manager”. You may think it sounds catchy, but it isn’t clear to candidates who are searching for a new job.
